  • I. Introduction

The TeV4LHC workshop is a year-long series of meetings to explore the interface between the physics programs at the Tevatron Run II and the LHC. The goal is to see how the Tevatron can impact the LHC physics program, and how the experience at Run II can be helpful at the LHC.

    Convenors:
    Cecilia Gerber(D0),
    Pasha Murat(CDF),
    Tim Tait(TH),
    Evelyn Thomson(CDF),
    Doreen Wackeroth(TH).

Send email to all five convenors.

II. Draft Goals for Top & EW Working Group

Top production (ttbar and single top)

  • Better models of event characteristics
  • Currently use LO PYTHIA/HERWIG/ALPGEN: What physics is included? What's not?
  • Investigate MC@NLO ttbar production
  • top mass - control of systematic errors
  • single top "aiming for discovery" analysis techniques for difficult signal extend already good dialogue with theorists
  • Top Properties

  • How well can we measure Vtb, (Vts, Vtd)?
  • Is there any shot at the t-t-Z vertex before a linear collider?
  • What kind of bounds on anomalous couplings can we expect from Tevatron?
  • W+jets, Wbb+jets, Wcc+jets, Wc+jets

  • Major backgrounds to top (cross-section, W helicity, single top) and new physics (Higgs, anything with lepton, MET and jets)
  • NLO exists for W+2jets and Wbbar
  • how can we use it in analyses? eg single top search
  • Check assumptions for ttbar background estimates
  • LO Matrix Elements

  • How to combine events generated with different numbers of b, c and jets? This is a big problem for background calculations and kinematic modeling. Test approaches suggested by Mangano and CKKW and others... Choice of scale?
  • Top as a Background to New Physics

  • How good does tt, ttj and ttjj (background to qqH->qqWW at for low mass Higgs search in first years of LHC) have to be?
  • Can we test the theoretical predictions for ttbar and single top?
  • A lot of LHC Higgs physics these days relies on the W-fusion production modes.
  • PDFs

  • Top is a clean way to study PDFs at high x, which is definately of interest for LHC.
  • Single-top in the t-channel is perhaps a unique way to measure the b PDF at high x, which can be important for Higgs physics, etc.
  • W Mass

  • Study of different methods (traditional M_T method vs cross section ratios, p_T distributions etc.)
  • What can we learn from Tevatron?
  • What needs to be done to get ready for LHC?
  • Improved Monte Carlos, combination of RESBOS (QCD) and WGRAD/ZGRAD (EWK), inclusion of higher orders (QED) etc.
  • Other W/Z topics

  • Measurements of triple gauge boson couplings, asymmetries, total cross sections.
  • What can we learn about PDFs and new physics (e.g. search for anomalous TGCs, extra gauge bosons) ?
  • W and Z events as luminosity monitors

  • III. Working Group Members

Please email the convenors to join the mailing list.
